Copper roofing contractors in London

Dr Master Craft installs copper roofing and copper cladding for London houses, churches and commercial buildings. Copper is specified when a client wants a roof that will live and change — patinating from bright metal through deep brown to the famous green — and that can last for generations when it is detailed correctly. We work with Aurubis and KME copper in traditional and standing seam systems, and we will tell you honestly when zinc or aluminium is the better specification for your building.

Traditional Copper Roofing

Copper has been the gold standard of the construction industry for centuries, and for good reason. Combining lightweight versatility with unmatched durability.

Traditional copper roofs and standing seam copper

Traditional copper roofing is hand-worked hard metal: batten roll and standing seam roofs, welted hips and valleys, custom aprons, and dormers with fabricated fascia details — the coppersmith methods visible on our Church Cottage, Southill Park project (2025). Standing seam copper gives the same longevity with a crisper, contemporary line. Both demand a trained hard-metal roofer; copper punishes improvisation.

Copper cladding and copper dormers

Copper cladding carries the same living finish to walls and dormers: standing seam or flat-lock facades, dormer cheeks and roofs, feature bays and entrance surrounds. Pre-patinated green and pre-oxidised brown copper are available where the building needs the finished colour on day one.

Why copper roofs turn green — and how long it takes

The green is a patina: copper oxidises to brown copper oxide within the first years, then slowly converts to green copper carbonate/brochantite in UK air — typically 10–30 years depending on exposure, faster near the coast, slower in dry sheltered positions. The patina is protective armour, not decay; it is why copper roofs outlive their buildings. For the full chemistry and UK timescales, read our guide to why copper roofs turn green.

Copper roofing in North London, Wembley, Harrow and Essex

Copper demand in our patch concentrates in North and North West London — Hampstead, Highgate, Wembley, Harrow — for dormers, bay roofs and full traditional roofs, with copper roofs across Essex and the wider South East. “Copper roofing design” is a search we welcome: our architect-led team will detail to your drawings or produce them.

Aurubis and KME copper installers

We install Aurubis (including Nordic Brown and Nordic Green pre-patinated finishes) and KME copper (TECU ranges). Both carry material warranties when installed to manufacturer details — which is the standard we work to on every seam, clip and flashing.

Copper roofing cost — and when not to specify copper

Copper is the most expensive metal we install: the raw material price is high and the labour is slower. Cost per m² depends on system and complexity; our copper cladding cost guide publishes real UK figures. We advise against copper where budgets are tight, where theft risk is unmanaged, or where a client wants a fixed colour forever — living copper will not stay bright.

What are the benefits of Copper Roofs.

The Advantage: Why Copper?

  • Timeless Evolution: A copper roof is a "living" surface. It begins with a bright, fiery glow, deepens into rich bronze tones, and eventually develops the world-renowned green verdigris patina. This natural process creates a unique character that cannot be replicated.

  • Unmatched Durability: Copper is naturally corrosion-resistant and can easily withstand the harshest coastal winds and heaviest snowfalls. A properly installed copper roof by Dr. Mastercraft is a 100-year investment.

  • Zero Maintenance: Once the patina has formed, the copper essentially protects itself. It requires no painting, no cleaning, and no chemical treatments, saving you time and money over the decades.

  • Lightweight & Structural: Despite its strength, copper is incredibly lightweight, reducing the structural load on your building compared to tile or slate alternatives.

STILL NOT SURE?

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do copper roofs turn green?

Oxidation and patination: bright copper darkens to brown oxide within a few years, then gradually forms a green copper carbonate (brochantite) layer in typical UK air over 10–30 years. The green layer is self-protecting — it is the reason copper roofs last so long. Full explanation on our patina guide.

Is a copper roof turning green a physical or chemical change

A chemical change — new compounds (oxides, then carbonates) form on the surface. It is not paint failing and not corrosion damage; it is the metal protecting itself.

Do copper gutters and downpipes turn green too?

Yes, on the same timeline — often faster, because they stay wetter. Many clients specify copper guttering deliberately so roof and rainwater goods age together.

Do you install Aurubis copper?

Yes — Aurubis and KME are our standard copper sources, including pre-patinated Nordic Green and pre-oxidised Nordic Brown finishes for projects that need the mature colour immediately.

Can copper roofing be used on all types of buildings?

Almost — houses, churches, mansion blocks and commercial buildings all take copper well. The constraints are pitch (3°+ for standing seam), runoff management onto other materials, theft risk in some locations, and budget. We flag all of these at survey.

How much does a copper roof cost in London?

More than zinc or coated steel — copper is a premium raw material and slower to work. Our copper cost guide publishes real UK ranges; your fixed figure follows a measured survey.
