Copper cladding typically costs £300–£450 per m² supplied and installed in the UK, making it the most expensive of the common metal cladding materials — roughly 10–30% above zinc and well above aluminium or timber. But it's also the longest-lasting: peer-reviewed corrosion research shows copper loses as little as 1 micron of thickness per year in most UK atmospheres, which is why copper roofs and facades routinely survive 100 years and some are still working after 300.

For a typical two-storey extension elevation of 30–40 m², that's roughly £10,000–£16,000 for copper, before scaffolding (usually £900–£1,800 for a two-storey elevation) — a real number, and not a small one. So let's look at what you're actually paying for.
Why copper costs what it does: the metal itself is on a record run
Unlike most building materials, the biggest single ingredient in your copper cladding quote is a globally traded commodity — and it's been making headlines.
LME copper passed $13,000 per tonne for the first time in history in early 2026, peaking above $14,500/t in January and trading around $13,500–13,800/t through the summer — roughly 25% above where it sat two years earlier.
Europe's physical supply premiums hit records too: Aurubis set its 2026 European premium at $315/t and Codelco at $345/t, both all-time highs, on top of the exchange price.
Here's what that means at your wall. Architectural copper sheet for cladding is typically 0.6–0.7 mm thick — that's about 5.4–6.3 kg of copper per square metre. At current exchange prices, the raw metal value alone is around £55–£65 per m² before it's rolled, coated or patinated at the mill, cut into panels, or touched by an installer. Copper is genuinely, materially expensive — no contractor's margin explains that away.
The second cost is skill. Copper is unforgiving to work with: it marks easily, moves more with temperature than steel, and its joints must be folded — not sealed — to last. Standing seam and flatlock copper work is a specialist hard-metal craft, and the labour rate reflects that.

What you get for the money: the peer-reviewed case
This is where copper stops being a luxury and starts being arithmetic. The durability claims aren't marketing — they're some of the most studied numbers in building materials science.

Long-term field studies by Odnevall Wallinder, Leygraf and colleagues (KTH Royal Institute of Technology) show that copper's corrosion rate falls year after year as its protective patina builds — the surface effectively seals itself. Their work also confirms what good installers have always known: vertical copper facades corrode significantly less than horizontal surfaces, because walls shed water faster. Cladding is copper's kindest application.
3. It needs nothing from you for a century. A 2025 peer-reviewed study of architectural copper in Corrosion and Materials Degradation (MDPI) tracked copper and copper alloys through years of harsh outdoor exposure and confirmed the patina layer compacts and strengthens over time, suppressing further corrosion. There is no paint to renew, no coating to fail, no sealant to replace — which is why life-cycle cost studies (such as the BRANZ building research institute's cladding cost analysis) consistently find that for metal claddings, the lowest-cost option over a building's life is the low-maintenance one, even when the upfront price is highest.
4. It's worth money when it's done. Copper is 100% recyclable with no loss of properties, and scrap copper currently trades at a substantial fraction of new metal value. A copper facade removed in 2126 will be a pay-day, not a skip fee.
The cost-per-year maths
This is the comparison that reframes the whole question. Take a 40 m² elevation:
Copper at ~£350/m² (£14,000), 100-year life, no recoating cycle: about £3.50 per m² per year
Cedar timber at ~£165/m² (£6,600), but treated/oiled every 2–5 years and likely replaced around year 25–30: the first installation is cheaper — the second installation, plus three decades of maintenance visits, isn't

Copper cladding isn't expensive the way a sports car is expensive. It's expensive the way buying a house is expensive instead of renting for a hundred years.

What pushes a copper cladding quote up (or down)
Quotes vary a lot, and it's worth knowing why before comparing contractors:
System and panel size. Flatlock shingles and small-format panels use more labour per m² than long standing seam trays. Narrow seams and complex geometry add hours.
Finish. Natural mill copper is the baseline; factory pre-patinated finishes (brown, green) and bespoke alloys like Nordic Brass carry a premium.
Access and height. Scaffolding is usually quoted separately — budget £600–£1,200 for a single-storey elevation and £900–£1,800 for two storeys.
Build-up quality. A ventilated cavity, breathable membrane and correct substrate are not optional extras — trapped moisture is the one thing that genuinely can shorten a copper facade's life. If a quote is dramatically cheaper, this is usually where the money went missing.
Detailing. Windows, corners, parapets, curved sections and junctions with other materials all take hand-finishing time. Copper must also be kept clear of incompatible run-off (unprotected bitumen above copper is a documented corrosion hazard in the research literature — acidified water at pH ~1.5 has been measured running off weathered bitumen).
The copper market itself. With LME copper at record levels, material prices are moving quarterly. A quote is a snapshot, not a promise — if you're planning a project for next spring, lock the metal price early.
Copper vs the alternatives: honest advice
Copper is the right spend when the building is a long-term hold, the architecture deserves a material that improves with age, or the design calls for curves and geometry that only hand-formed metal can follow. It's the default for prestige extensions, heritage-sensitive work and one-off contemporary houses across London and the South East — and its evolving colour (bright bronze to deep brown to the famous green, which we explain in why copper roofs turn green) is something no painted finish can fake.

Does copper cladding need maintenance?
Almost none. Keep gutters and drainage clear and give it an occasional visual check. There is no painting, sealing or recoating over its entire life — the patina protects the metal and self-heals over light scratches.
Will copper cladding turn green on my house?
